Experimental Design Office was founded to create automatic airplane propellers and their regulating systems.

Official document determining the case of enterprise foundation is the National Commissariat Command of aircraft industry of the USSR 80/K of 22nd of March 1939. Zhdanov Konstantin Ivanovich was confirmed as a chief designer of the Experimental Design Office.

This year a serial production of the first domestic automatic AB-1 propeller with metal blades of K.I. Zhdanovs design was begun to equip I-16, I-153 aircrafts. From this point on the aircrafts of Russia and the Former Soviet Union (except sporting airplanes and light-engine aviation of recent years) were equipped with propellers created by Aerosila.

Beginning from the first years of its existence the enterprise began to gain a reputation as a productive developer of propellers and hydro-mechanical governors.

In a short prewar period and during intense years of the World War II a collective of the Experimental Design Office developed more than 12 propeller types manufactured in serial production amounting to more than 100,000 pcs. They equipped national aircrafts of those years: I-15, I-16, I-153, LI-2, MiG-3, SU-3, Pe-2, Il-2, Il-4, Il-10, TU-2, Pe-8 and others.

For a great contribution on a creation of propellers with high aerodynamic characteristics, which guaranteed the success of the Soviet aviation, many specialists of the Experimental Design Office were decorated with the Government awards.

The Fifties Evolution of turbo-prop aviation
 

In post-war years the turbo-prop aviation came to take place of aviation with piston propeller power units. Its rapid development needed an effective creation of the fundamental new propellers and hydro-mechanic systems of automatic control.

The collective of the enterprise coped with these tasks successfully created a whole range of reliable propellers and governors for An-8, An-12, An-10, Be-12, An-24, Il-18, An-30, An-26 and An-32 aircrafts and others.

 

Special technical achievements of the enterprise are related to the creation of unique coaxial 14,000 h.p. propellers for Tu-95, Tu-114 and An-22 (Antei) aircrafts. These propellers have no analogues until now in the worlds propeller building. For Tu-95 and Tu-114 aircrafts they guaranteed the achievement of flight cruise speed up to 800 km/h, and for An-22 aircraft unsurpassed thrust-to-weight ratio.

At the same time at the enterprise propellers for airfoil boat and snowplanes and also antitorque propeller for Mi-6, Mi-10, Mi-10K and Mi-1 helicopters.

The Sixties and Seventies  Growth of auxiliary gas-turbine engine themes

 

During rapid development of the jet-propelled aviation and decline of the turbo-prop aviation Aerosila was charged with one more technically capacious and fundamentally new subject direction for the enterprise. For 45 years the enterprise has been devoting itself to a creation of auxiliary gas-turbine engines with TA mark intended to start mid-flight engines of aircrafts and helicopters and to condition cockpits and cabins, to supply electrical energy for on-board systems and also to apply as a ground-based plant of aviation purpose.

Auxiliary gas-turbine engines created by the enterprise are being installed onboard Tu-134A, Tu-154, Tu-154, Tu-154M, Il-62M, Il-76T, Il-76, Jak-42, Tu-160, An-74, Tu-204, An-70 aircrafts and others units.

Almost all aicrafts and helicopters of the State (except Il-86 and Il-96) are equipped with auxiliary gas-turbine engines of Aerosila.

The enterprise proceeded to create screw actuators power ball-screw mechanisms with integrated gear-boxes to change wing sweep of airplane.

Because of the technical characteristics these unique products were used onboard MiG-23, Tu-22M, Su-24, Tu-144, Tu-160 aircrafts and others.

Screw actuators, which are the critical parts especially, had none of breakdowns over their long-term exploiting.

The Seventies  Ships on air cushion

By request of the Ship industry a family of lift-propulsion complexes for 6 ships on air cushion: Skat, Murena, Kalmar, Omar, Jeyran and Zubr are being created.

 

The Eighties  Creation of new generation propulsors

Aerosila created the first propeller with power of 360 h.p. with new blades of polymeric composite materials.

On the threshold of the world fuel-energy crisis at the end of the seventies the enterprise proceeded to create highly economical noiseless propfan-driven propulsors.

The firstling of such product type became the eight-bladed propfan with CB-24 metal blades, which was tested onboard An-24 aircraft and achieved ability to further works according to propfan themes.

The enterprise working closely with the Scientific Research Institute of Aviation industry started actively to create a fundamentally new multiblade feathered-reversible propfans and propellers with composite blades for aircrafts of new generation. According to the purposeful branch complex program the fulfilled large capacity of team-works allowed to originate modern methodology of designing, to develop and to improve test and production basis. Furthermore the most problematical creation task of light and reliable blade was solved successfully. After the complex of technological and material tasks on composite blades had been solved, the character of progressive serial production was defined, where special attention was paid to creation of modern equipment, hardware and devices for fundamentally new blade production made of polymeric composite materials.

1994 Practically as a result of work complex fulfilled in 85 different programs was a creation of basic coaxial CB-36 propfan with composite blades with power of 10,000 h.p. and later on more powerful (for 14,000 h.p.) CB-27 propfan for An-70 aircraft. CB-27 propfan has no worlds analogues. At flight cruise speeds of airplane with turbo propfan engine similar to airplane speeds with turbo-jet bypass engine, it provides high efficiency (0,9 for Mn=0,7), high takeoff ability, reversionary characteristics and an extremely short start and run of aircraft.

The fuel economy amounts to 30% due to application of turbo-propfaned engine instead of turbo-jet bypass engine of comparable technical level.

  Type certificate received for the first representative of multiblade composite propeller of new generation, it is CV-34 propeller with 2,500 h.p. power, which was created by Aerosila for Il-114 aircraft. After CV-34 the enterprise had two new propellers more with composite blades. There is AV-140 with power of up to 3,000 h.p. for An-140 aircraft and also AV-36 of 1,500 h.p. for An-38 aircraft.

 

1997 

Propfans and propellers of new generation possess a high aerodynamic efficiency and differ from previous propellers in less dimensions and weight, availability of the enlarged number of light composite blades, less noise level and enlarged number of operating hours.

Application of electronics in the new systems of automatic control of propellers allowed to increase number of control functions, to use diagnostics and synchrophasing of propellers.

The nineties and 21st century Creation of auxiliary gas-turbine engines of new generation

 

Creation of auxiliary gas-turbine engines of new generation: TA-14, TA18-100, TA18-200, TA-14 AGTE and its modifications are aimed to exploit onboard Jak-130, Il-114, An-140 aircrafts and Mi-8, Mi-171, Ka-62 helicopters.

The decision was made to apply TA18-100 auxiliary engine onboard Tu-334 newest liner.

In 2005 certification of TA18-200 AGTE with 365 kW of equivalent power is being planned. TA12-60 engines onboard Tu-204, Tu-214, An-70 aircrafts will be replaced by new AGTE, which differs radically from its forerunner in modern digital control system with full authority.

Appearance of aircrafts and helicopters with new TA14, TA18-100 and TA18-200 AGTEs and their modifications in the aviation markets enables perfectly to increase a competitiveness of modern aircrafts and helicopters of the country.

For the time of its existence the enterprise has developed:

  • More than 100 types of propellers with power of 20-14,000 h.p. for 75 different objects( and corresponding number of hydromechanical regulators)
  • 15 names of AGTE with equivalent power of 100-475 h.p. for 50 different objects
  • 10 names of ball-screw governors for working loads of 10-130 tons for 7 aircraft types.

The collective of the enterprise, which was always focused on a solution of the state problems has a good reputation both by partners on creation of aircraft technics and by exploiting organizations.

At the enterprise was organized a unique high professional school in the field of creation of propellers, propfans and AGTE, found a unique test base and modern specialized production thanks to succession of developer generations and presence of a constant tendency of development.
